Women in Agriculture and Reading Empowerment Initiative

Supporting women with literacy, agricultural training, and agribusiness opportunities to build resilient livelihoods.

Women working in agriculture and learning together in northern Ghana

About this programme

In rural northern Ghana, women are the backbone of household food security and family welfare — yet they face significant barriers to economic independence. Limited literacy, restricted access to agricultural training and inputs, and exclusion from market networks keep many women farming at subsistence level. The Women in Agriculture and Reading Empowerment Initiative addresses these interconnected challenges through a holistic programme that combines adult literacy instruction with agricultural skills training and agribusiness support.

The programme begins with literacy. Women who participate in the Foundation's literacy programmes gain the reading, writing, and numeracy skills needed to access agricultural information, manage household finances, and engage with markets. Building on this foundation, the programme provides training in climate-resilient farming techniques, soil management, post-harvest handling, and small-scale agribusiness development. Women learn to increase their crop yields, reduce post-harvest losses, and connect with buyers who offer fair prices.

The initiative also supports women in forming cooperative groups where they can pool resources, share knowledge, and access larger markets together. By linking literacy with livelihoods, the programme ensures that women's new reading and numeracy skills are immediately applied in ways that improve household income and food security — creating a virtuous cycle where learning and earning reinforce each other.

Our approach

Literacy Foundation

Adult literacy instruction in reading, writing, and numeracy, delivered in the local language and linked directly to practical agricultural and financial applications.

Agricultural Training

Hands-on training in climate-smart farming techniques, soil fertility management, water conservation, post-harvest handling, and sustainable land use practices.

Cooperative Development

Supporting women to form and manage cooperative groups that enable collective purchasing, shared equipment use, bulk marketing, and mutual support networks.

Who it serves

Women farmers and their familiesThis programme is designed for women in rural communities across northern Ghana who are engaged in smallholder farming — whether as their primary livelihood or as a supplement to household income. By extension, the programme benefits their children and families through improved household food security and income.

When women thrive, families and communities follow

Women reinvest up to ninety percent of their income in their families — on food, education, and healthcare — compared to a much smaller share for men. In northern Ghana, where women's agricultural productivity is constrained by limited access to training, inputs, and markets, closing the gender gap in agriculture has the potential to transform household wellbeing at scale. This programme addresses the root causes of that gap: literacy, skills, and economic opportunity.
