Passion Word Spelling Challenge

Building vocabulary, confidence, and a love of language through the thrill of competition.

Students participating in a spelling competition in northern Ghana

About this programme

Spelling is the gateway to literacy. A child who can spell confidently can read fluently, write expressively, and communicate effectively. The Passion Word Spelling Challenge transforms spelling from a classroom drill into an exciting, community-wide competition that motivates children to expand their vocabulary and master the building blocks of English literacy.

The Challenge operates at multiple levels: classroom competitions feed into school-level events, which culminate in inter-school and regional championships. At each stage, children prepare by studying word lists, practising pronunciation, and learning word meanings — not just memorising letter sequences. The competitive format creates natural motivation, while the supportive, celebratory atmosphere ensures that every participant feels proud of their effort, regardless of the outcome.

Teachers play a central role as coaches, integrating spelling preparation into their regular literacy instruction. The Challenge provides teachers with word lists, practice materials, and coaching guidance, strengthening the quality of literacy instruction in partner schools beyond the competition itself. Parents and community members are invited to attend championship events as spectators, turning spelling into a community celebration of learning.

Our approach

Multi-Level Competitions

Classroom, school, inter-school, and regional championship rounds that give every child the opportunity to participate and progress, with appropriate word lists and expectations at each level.

Teacher Coaching Support

Providing teachers with structured word lists, practice activities, and coaching techniques that strengthen spelling and vocabulary instruction in the regular classroom.

Community Celebration

Championship events are open to parents and community members, transforming spelling into a public celebration of academic achievement that builds community pride in children's learning.

Who it serves

Basic school learners across northern GhanaThe Challenge is designed for primary and junior high school students, from early readers mastering basic phonics to older students building advanced vocabulary. Teachers benefit from the coaching materials and classroom integration, and communities benefit from the celebration of academic achievement.

Every word opens a door

English literacy is the primary medium of instruction in Ghanaian schools from upper primary onward, yet many children in northern Ghana reach upper primary without the English vocabulary needed to understand their textbooks. The Spelling Challenge addresses this foundational gap directly, building the word knowledge that unlocks comprehension across every subject — from science and social studies to mathematics word problems.
