Northern Region Outstanding Teachers Awards

Recognising and celebrating the teachers who transform classrooms and change lives.

Teachers being recognized at an awards ceremony in northern Ghana

About this programme

Behind every child who learns to read, every student who passes an exam, and every graduate who pursues a career is a teacher who showed up, believed in them, and gave their best — often in challenging conditions with limited resources. The Northern Region Outstanding Teachers Awards exists to recognise and celebrate these educators, bringing visibility and honour to the profession that makes all other professions possible.

The Awards programme identifies exceptional teachers across the Northern Region through a nomination and review process that involves school leadership, community members, and education officials. Candidates are evaluated not just on examination results but on their demonstrated commitment to student learning, their innovative use of limited resources, their leadership within the school community, and the lasting impact they have had on the children they serve.

Award recipients are celebrated at a public ceremony that brings together educators, education officials, traditional leaders, and community members. Beyond the recognition itself, the Awards aim to elevate the status of the teaching profession in northern Ghana — inspiring current teachers to strive for excellence and encouraging talented young people to consider teaching as a rewarding and respected career path.

Our approach

Nomination and Review

A community-driven process where school leaders, colleagues, parents, and education officials nominate teachers who demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation, and impact in their classrooms.

Awards Ceremony

A public celebration that brings together the education community, traditional leaders, and the public to honour outstanding teachers and share their stories of dedication and impact.

Professional Recognition

Award recipients serve as role models and mentors within the teaching community, demonstrating what is possible and inspiring other educators to pursue excellence in their own classrooms.

Who it serves

Primary and junior high school teachers in northern GhanaThe Awards recognise teachers at all stages of their careers, from early-career educators bringing fresh energy to the classroom to veteran teachers whose decades of service have shaped generations of learners. The programme also serves the broader teaching profession by raising its profile and celebrating its contributions.

Great teachers change everything

A single exceptional teacher can alter the trajectory of hundreds of children's lives over the course of a career. In northern Ghana, where schools face significant resource constraints and teacher motivation can be challenged by difficult working conditions, recognising and celebrating excellence is essential to retaining talented educators and attracting new ones to the profession. When teachers are honoured, children see that learning matters — and the whole community benefits.
