Career Guidance and Choice Summit

About this programme
For students in northern Ghana preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) or the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the transition points are critical. The choices they make about which senior high school to attend, which programme of study to pursue, or which career path to follow have lifelong consequences — yet most students navigate these decisions with little to no formal guidance.
The Career Guidance and Choice Summit fills this gap. The Summit brings together examination candidates from schools across the Yendi area for a focused day of career counselling, mentorship, and practical guidance. Professionals from diverse fields — education, health, engineering, agriculture, business, public service, and technology — share their career journeys and help students understand what different paths require and where they can lead.
Students participate in small-group mentorship sessions where they can ask questions directly, explore career options they may never have considered, and receive help mapping their subject choices and examination performance to realistic post-secondary pathways. The Summit also engages parents and teachers, helping them understand how to support students through these critical decisions rather than directing them based on limited information or outdated assumptions.
Our approach
Career Exploration Sessions
Professionals from diverse fields present their career journeys, helping students understand the breadth of possibilities beyond the familiar options of teaching, nursing, and farming.
Small-Group Mentorship
Students rotate through facilitated small-group discussions with mentors, where they can ask candid questions about career paths, educational requirements, and the realities of different professions.
Pathway Planning
Practical guidance on subject selection, senior high school placement, and tertiary education options, helping students align their current choices with their long-term aspirations.
Who it serves
BECE and WASSCE candidates — The Summit primarily serves final-year JHS and SHS students preparing for national examinations. By extension, it also supports their parents and teachers, equipping the adults in students' lives with the knowledge to provide informed guidance rather than direction based on limited information.
Informed choices change trajectories
In northern Ghana, where exposure to diverse career paths is limited and guidance counselling in schools is scarce, students often make critical educational decisions with incomplete information. A well-timed career conversation can be the difference between a student who drops out of an ill-suited programme and one who finds a path that matches their interests and abilities — leading to better outcomes for the individual, their family, and their community.
